COMMUNITY POLYTECHNIC SCHEME (C.P.S.)
 

As a recognition of the programmes conducted in the field of rural development and the close linkage and interaction this Polytechnic created with the local community, the Ministry of Human Resource Development declared this Polytechnic as a Community Polytechnic.

The Community Polytechnic Scheme,Sree Rama Polytechnic,Valapad is entrusted with the responsibility of implementing community development activities as a part of the Village adoption programme of Cochin Refineries under special component plan.

 

The Community Polytechnic Scheme is highly instrumental in

1.
Improving the life style of rural people.
2.
Upgrading traditional skills and crafts.
3.
Exposing modern technological invocations and inventions to the rural areas.
4.
Identifying areas in which science and technology have a positive role in rural development.

Socio-Economic Survey and Planning

 

Socio-Economic survey of three block areas in Thrissur Dist.have been completed to identify the development potential and areas in which science and technology have potential role and felt needs of the people, The data collected have been analysed to formulate programmes aimed at the improvement of life style of poor.

A study on "Socio-Economic correlates of Child and Health Care facility utilization" was conducted in Nattika Village.Socio-Economic survey of the tribal village at Malakkappara was conducted to identify the specific problems of tribals.

Socio-Economic survey of 2 blocks Anthikad and Thalikkulam was conducted in 1999.Basic data of below poverty line families are available from the data collected.

 
 

Man Power Development and Training

 

Job oriented skill development programmes are conducted in 30 different trades.

Upto this year more than 5506 youth gained training under Community Polytechnic Scheme. As per the information received,75% of the trained youth during the last Five years are either self employed or in gainful employment especially in gulf countries.Two co-operative society (WICOS) and the other for the production of alternative and appropriative building materials.

Linkage has already been established with financial institutions and banks so that the youth after training will get all sort of assistance.

 
 

Transfer of Technology

 

More than 3385 high efficiency smokeless chullahs are installed in different villages in Thrissur Didtrict in collaboration with the Centre of Science and Technology for Rural Develoment (COSTFORD) Rural Sanitary System designed by the World Health Organisation constructed in ten house for demonstration and wider diffusion.

Three community latrines using cost reduction techniques and the design developed by the WHO constructed for demonstration at the premises of Technical High School,Thrissur, Priyadarsini Colony,Thalikulam and Sree Narayana U.P School,Engandiyoor.

Drip irrigation techniques developed by the centre for Water Resources Development and Management(CWRDM) put on demonstration at a selected plot at Thalikulam.

A training cum demonstration programme an the treatment of coconut leaf thatch for extension of life was conducted in collaboration with the COSTFORD and the Regional Research Laboratory,Trivandrum.Training programme for rural youth for the installation of Smokeless chulhas were conducted at Desamangalam, Aryampadam, Poyya and Engandiyoor.139 youth were given training and 374 chulhas were installed as part of the training programme.

Under the auspices of the Netherlands government sponsored by the Kerala Water Authority,we could transfer technology for 500 twin pit type latrines in Edathiruthy Panchayat.Health Education on a large scale covering about 2,500 households has been completed in the same Panchayat

Technical Services in Rural Area

Mobile service/repair unit for undertaking minor repairs have been setup.A consultancy cell on Housing established to provide technical assistance.

Beside the Main centres at Triprayar,Extension centers were opened in 6 villages at Manalur, Pazhuvil, Perinjanam, Thrithallur and Anthikad.

Survey for Canal for irrigation in Thanniam Panchayat.Survey work of 20 KM long Canal in Thalikulam Block under Thalikulam Block Panchayat. Repair of water supply & Electrical Wiring in PHC, Elinjipra and Chalakudy.

Support Services

The Community polytechnic Scheme has covered 240 villages by providing support services like preparation of project report, arrangement of loans from banks, sanitation, public health, social forestry and health and nutrition.

It has already formed two co-operative societies, one for women and one for scheduled caste youth.

Three medical camps were conducted in collaboration with National Service Scheme of the Polytechnic and the District health authorities at Nattika, Malakkapara and at Polytechnic.

The CPS has already completed the electrical wiring of "NAVOYADA VIDYALAYA" in the District and the site survey covering about 30 acres of land is also undertaken.

Dissemination of Information

A workshop on "Housing the millions-cost reduction and environmental factors " was conducted in collaboration with the COSTFORD and thirty engineers attended the workshop.

Constructed a road connecting Nattika Beach road and Colony road covering a distance of 2 KM in Ward No.9 of Nattika Panchayath in collaboration with NSS. Conducted one day exhibitions in four places.Another two day exhibition was conducted as part at Manalur.A cooking competition was conducted as part of the exhibition at Thalikulam for the preparation of nutritious food articles using low cost and locally available vegetables and materials.

Conducted a national workshop in collaboration with the COSTFORD in "Identification and Application of Science and Technology Components for Rural Development", sponsored by the Department of Science and Technology form 2-10-1986 to 7-10-96.

Participated in all India Trade fair exhibition conducted by Chavakkad Municipality from 23-12-1999 to 31-01-2000.

2. Booklet on "Biogas Plant Waste"by Prof.T.C.K.Menon.
3. Leaflet on "Renewable sources of Energy" and "High efficiency wood burning stoves".
4. Book in Malayalam "Latrine in all Houses".
5. Booklet in Malayalam " Low Cost Houses-Why? What? ".
6. Booklet in Malayalam "Appropriate Sanitation System for Rural Areas".
   

Video shows on "No Waste House construction techniques,Installation of Smokeless Chulhas and Treatment of Coconut leaf Thatch" and film shows were conducted at various places.
